Here are some of the sources we use to help us build a picture of
housing markets (n.b. a couple of these sites are specific to the CORE (The COntinuous REcording System - see Using data for a description)
Acorn (CACI produce Acorn lifestyle data which describes the population characteristics of an area. This is not free data, but it can be useful in detailed analysis)
DCLG HSSA (data on many different aspects of housing by LA/region)
East Midlands Public Health Observatory (regional data about the health of the population at a variety of geographical levels)
Health Poverty Index (allows comparison of health indicators over time/areas/between groups)
ONS Mid Year Estimates (population estimates available nationally and by LA in age groups. Also available through the Neighbourhood Statistics Site under Resident Population Estimates by Broad Age Band)
Nationwide historical house price data (regional and national house price indices using data from Nationwide)
Neighbourhood Statistics (all available Census data can be downloaded from here - you might want to check out the training videos first)
NHS Information Centre (Health related demographic statistics collected by the National Health Service)
Office for National Statistics (contains huge amounts of data on the economy, society, housing, health, population etc, etc.)
DWP Tabulation Tool (statistics provided by the Department for Work and Pensions on benefits, employment, the labour market, and National Insurance number allocations to Adult Overseas Nationals entering the UK)
Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML used to make their data accessible to non-members, but have recently withdrawn access. However, you can still see some broad statistics via this site)
UK Housing Review 2007/8 (a joint effort to compile key data about housing in the UK, includes a compendium of data tables with lots of information (good for getting a broad picture, though mainly at a national level)
International Passenger Survey (links to ONS - provides data about tourism and migrants entering and leaving the UK)
Government Actuary's Department (more demographic projections - national population, marital status and life expectancy are available up to 2006)
POPPI (Projecting Older People Population Information System - contains lots of data about the older population and related health and social care issues down to local authority level. You must register to use this site)
PANSI (Projecting Adult Needs and Service Information System - contains data about the population aged 18 to 64 in relation to health and social care down to local authority level. You must register to use this site)
HAPPI (Housing Our Ageing Population Panel for Innovation - part of the
Homes and Communities agency, this group "will gather good practice from
across Europe and put together new and creative proposals to help put us at
the forefront of housing for older people.") RSR (Regulatory and Statistical Returns Survey 2009, compiled by the Tenant Services Authority. Contains information collected from Registered Social Landlords (Housing Associations) about their housing stock. This site also has a good list of links to other data sources)
Output Area Classifications (combines attributes of the population as at the 2001 Census to give the generalised characteristic of each output area. To be used with caution! See http://www.areaclassification.org.uk/ )
ASHE (the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings - provides lots of information about earnings broken down by region, industry, occupation, gender, age groups etc. Be careful not to assume earnings = income (see our comment on Using data - help & advice)
Government Offices for the English Regions (provides national level data with a gateway to each regional government office. A useful starting point for regional research/finding out about regional policies and strategies).
info4local (provided by Directgov - allows access to current publications or issues across the public sector, with relevant research topics and policy focus)
geograph (a bit of light relief from all that heavy data crunching. This site aims to collect photos representative of every square kilometre in England - good for getting a feel for the place you're researching)
Nethouseprices and House Prices (useful if you're looking at house price data for a fairly small area - provides sale prices and other information according to postcode/street name derived from Land Registry data)
Survey of English Housing (now the English Housing Survey - collects data from households about housing characteristics, attitudes towards and issues surrounding housing. Published annually)
Communities and Local Government (the homepage for most publications, research and statistics commissioned at a national level)
BRE Decent Homes and Stock Model (gives data about the condition of private housing - available via the hi4em website)
Housing Intelligence for the East Midlands (hi4em) (provides a lot of regional/local authority level data, also in map format, focusing on housing markets and private sector housing conditions)
New and recently moving households (provided by DCLG - national level data about trends in migration behaviour - who moves and why/where from or to/when etc.)
Sample Size Calculator (by Creative Research Systems - allows you to calculate your target sample size if you are carrying out a survey)
Dataspring (provided by the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research - specialising in UK social housing data with some useful data allowing comparison of rent levels including private renting)
Valuation Office Agency (has incorporated the duties of the Rent Service; provides rental valuation services to Local Authorities in England to assist them in settling claims for housing benefit. Contains data on private rent levels.) We will keep adding to this page if we find any more good sites -
